Dog Show Judging Rules

Dogs will not be judged against each other; dogs will be judged as individuals against the standard. Dogs will not receive points based on the number of other dogs in the show.

Judging will be based on a scale of 1-10 in six categories as follows:

  1. Overall appearance or impression, movement/soundness
  2. Head, mouth, bite, ears, eye color, pigment, and expression
  3. Neck, top line, front angulation/shoulder, chest, rib cage, height
  4. Rear angulation/hindquarters, tail carriage
  5. Coat character, coat color, overall conditioning
  6. Temperament (growling or biting will be grounds for immediate disqualification)

This makes 60 points possible from each judge; three judges make 180 points possible. A total of 162 points (90%) must be attained for working toward the champion title.

A serious fault in any category MUST carry a score of less than 6. Any dog receiving less than a 6 in any category by any judge will forfeit that show score.

The dog receiving the highest score above 162 points will be declared Best of Group for that particular show and will be awarded a ribbon. If two or more dogs tie with equal points, a new judging will be held to break the tie.

A dog must accumulate 486 or more points in three shows with no show netting fewer than 162 points to be declared Champion (Ch.).

If any dog receives 522 or more points in three shows with no show netting fewer than 174 points in each of three shows, it will be declared Champion Par Excellence (ChPE.).

The Best of Show / Champion competition is open to all Group winners in the show. To be eligible the dog must receive a score of at least 162 points and be selected best of group. If the competition consists of four or more Best of Group winners, the Best in Show will receive a championship title from United All Breed.

The Distinguished Show Champion (This is a special event not normally held.) Overall show champion will be chosen from the champions having the most points. Dogs will not be judged against each other. If two or more dogs tie with equal points, a new judging (preferably) with different judges will be held to break the tie. If a tie still exists following the second judging, each dog with the highest points will be declared co-Distinguished Show Champions. No other places will be recognized.

Important Information for New Exhibitors:

  • Include all titles with the name of the dog - in order that they may be printed on the certificates. (Numerous titles may be printed as Multi Ch, as space dictates).
  • The day of the show you will check in at the chairman's table and pick up a folder.
  • You may bait your dog, and you may hand stack your dog in the ring.
